Is oatmeal low FODMAP?

Low FODMAP

Yes. Rolled oats and oatmeal are low FODMAP in a typical breakfast portion. Very large bowls add up, so serving size still matters.

Oats are one of the most useful staples on the low FODMAP diet, and Monash University lists them as low FODMAP. A normal bowl of oatmeal or overnight oats is a reliable breakfast during the elimination phase.

Portion and type matter

Larger portions contain more FODMAPs, so a huge bowl is not the same as a typical one. Monash has tested rolled oats and quick (instant) oats separately, and the low FODMAP serving for quick oats is smaller. Check the Monash University FODMAP app for tested portions.

Watch the toppings

The oats are rarely the problem. Honey, dried fruit, apple and regular milk are common high FODMAP additions. Try lactose-free milk, maple syrup, strawberries, blueberries or peanut butter instead.

What about oat milk?

Oat milk is not automatically low FODMAP. Serving size matters, so check the Monash app before pouring a large glass.
