Is apple low FODMAP?
No. Apples are high FODMAP because they contain both excess fructose and sorbitol. Apple juice, cider and dried apple are high FODMAP too.
Main FODMAP group: Excess fructose, Polyols (sorbitol, mannitol)
Apples are a double FODMAP food. They contain more fructose than glucose, which some people absorb poorly, and they contain sorbitol, a polyol. That makes it hard to tell which group is responsible when an apple causes symptoms.
Apple products count too
Apple juice, cider, apple sauce and dried apple are all high FODMAP. Apple juice concentrate is also used to sweeten many “no added sugar” products, so check labels.
Finding out which part bothers you
During reintroduction, test excess fructose (for example with honey) and sorbitol separately. If you only react to one of them, you may tolerate other fruits that contain just the other.
