Is wine low FODMAP?

Low FODMAP

Yes. Red, white and sparkling wine are low FODMAP in a single glass. Sweet dessert wines are high in excess fructose, and alcohol can irritate the gut.

Dry red, white and sparkling wines are low FODMAP in a single glass. The exception is sweet dessert or “sticky” wine, which Monash University rates as high in excess fructose.

Alcohol is still a gut irritant

Low FODMAP does not mean gut-friendly. Alcohol can irritate the gut and change how fast it moves, so more than a glass or two can trigger symptoms in people with IBS regardless of FODMAPs. Follow your local drinking guidelines.

Watch the mixers

Spritzers and sangria may include fruit juice, apple or soft drinks sweetened with high fructose corn syrup. Soda water and fresh citrus are safer additions.

Track it

If you are unsure whether wine bothers you, log it with your meals and symptoms in a food and symptom diary. See also beer.
