Is beer low FODMAP?

Low FODMAP

Yes. Regular beer is low FODMAP in a single can or bottle. It is not gluten-free, and the bubbles and alcohol can still trigger IBS symptoms.

Beer is made from grains such as barley and wheat, which are high in fructans. During brewing, yeast ferments most of those carbohydrates, so regular beer is low FODMAP in a single serving.

Low FODMAP is not gluten-free

FODMAPs and gluten are different things. Beer still contains gluten, so people with coeliac disease need a beer labeled gluten-free.

Bubbles and alcohol

Carbonation can cause bloating on its own, and alcohol can irritate the gut. Several beers in a row can trigger symptoms even though each one is low FODMAP. Cider is made from apple and is high FODMAP.

Track it

A food and symptom diary helps you see whether drinks, rather than food, are behind your symptoms. See also wine.
