Is potato low FODMAP?

Low FODMAP

Yes. Potatoes are low FODMAP in typical portions, whether boiled, baked, mashed or roasted. Watch for milk, onion and garlic in the extras.

White potatoes contain very little FODMAP, and Monash University lists them as a low FODMAP vegetable. Boiled, baked, mashed or roasted, they are a filling base for meals during the elimination phase.

Watch the extras

Mashed potato is often made with regular milk or cream, gravy usually contains onion, and seasoned fries and potato chips may use onion or garlic powder. Use lactose-free milk, butter, garlic-infused oil and herbs instead.

Sweet potato is different

Sweet potato contains mannitol, so its portion matters. If you want a bigger serving, mix the two.

Not every symptom is a FODMAP

Large, greasy meals such as a big plate of fries can trigger symptoms because of the fat, not the potato. A food and symptom diary helps you tell the difference.
