Is sweet potato low FODMAP?

Portion matters

It depends on the portion. A small serving of sweet potato is low FODMAP, but larger servings are high in mannitol, a polyol.

Main FODMAP group: Polyols (sorbitol, mannitol)

Sweet potato contains mannitol, a polyol. A small serving stays within a low FODMAP limit, but a large portion of sweet potato fries or mash does not.

How much is OK?

Serving size matters, so check the Monash University FODMAP app for tested portions. A practical trick is to mix sweet potato with regular potato, which is low FODMAP, to get a full plate without going over.

Do you react to mannitol?

Mannitol is one of the groups you test during the reintroduction phase. If you tolerate it, larger portions of sweet potato, cauliflower and mushrooms may come back.
