Is tea low FODMAP?
Yes for black, green, white and peppermint tea. Chamomile, fennel and oolong tea are high FODMAP, and strong chai can be too.
Tea is a good example of why FODMAP ratings are specific. Black, green, white and peppermint tea are low FODMAP, but some popular herbal teas are not.
Teas to watch
Monash University testing has found chamomile, fennel and oolong tea to be high FODMAP. Chai depends on strength: weakly brewed chai is low FODMAP, while strongly brewed chai is high. Check the Monash University FODMAP app for current ratings.
What goes in the cup
Regular cow’s milk adds lactose and honey adds excess fructose. Herbal blends may also include chicory root, apple pieces or dried fruit, so read the ingredients.
Peppermint and IBS
Peppermint tea is low FODMAP, and many people with IBS find it soothing. See also coffee.
