Is coffee low FODMAP?
Yes. Black coffee, espresso and instant coffee are low FODMAP. The milk you add matters, and caffeine can trigger IBS symptoms on its own.
Plain coffee is low FODMAP, whether it is brewed, espresso or instant. If coffee upsets your stomach, the cause is more often what is in the cup with it, or the caffeine itself.
The milk matters
A latte or cappuccino made with regular cow’s milk contains lactose. Lactose-free milk and almond milk are low FODMAP. If you order soy, ask which kind the café uses: soy milk made from whole soybeans is high FODMAP, while soy milk made from soy protein is low.
Caffeine and IBS
Caffeine stimulates the gut and can cause urgency or loose stools in some people, regardless of FODMAPs. Chicory-based coffee substitutes are high in fructans, so they are not a low FODMAP alternative. Flavored syrups and creamers can contain high fructose corn syrup or milk.
Track it
If you are not sure whether coffee is a trigger, log it alongside your symptoms. A food and symptom diary makes the pattern visible. See also tea.
