Is avocado low FODMAP?
Portion matters
It depends on the portion. A small serving of avocado is low FODMAP, but larger servings are high in sorbitol, a polyol.
Main FODMAP group: Polyols (sorbitol, mannitol)
Avocado is a good example of why serving size matters on the low FODMAP diet. It contains sorbitol, and the amount you eat decides whether it stays within a low FODMAP limit.
How much is OK?
A small serving, such as a few slices on toast, is generally low FODMAP. A whole avocado or a large bowl of guacamole is high in sorbitol. Tested serving sizes are listed in the Monash University FODMAP app, which is updated as foods are retested.
Know your own limit
Sensitivity to sorbitol varies a lot between people. If avocado is a favorite, test it during the reintroduction phase and log how different portions feel.
